Michael (Mike) Lee Hewlett was born February 17, 1946 in Cleburne, TX to Clarence Thomas Hewlett and Mildred White Hewlett. Mike graduated from Cleburne HS in 1964. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1969, which included a year-long work program with NASA. Mike also obtained a Master’s in Operations Research from SMU in 1978.
In 1969, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy, entering Aviation Officer Candidate School, which was followed by Navy Flight and Fleet Replacement Training. In June 1971, Mike was assigned to VS-24 flying the S2-E/G Tracker, completing three extended deployments aboard the USS Intrepid. From 1973 through 1993, Mike served in a number of positions including Staff Command and Control Officer, Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO), and Commanding Officer. On October 1, 1993, Mike retired after extended honorable service to his country.
On August 16, 1974, Mike married his beloved wife, Janice P. Hewlett in Ferndale, MI. Together they celebrated over 46 wonderful years.
After retiring from the Navy, Mike worked at Lockheed Martin until retiring in 2008. He continued employment with several contracting firms and spent the last six years as Engineer for Survice Engineering.
His hobbies included traveling, photography, and genealogy. Mike was instrumental in establishing the Peninsula church of Christ in Hampton, Virginia.
Mike had three great loves in life: Faith, Family and Flag.
In addition to his beloved wife, Mike was survived by his children: Jennifer Howells, Jeffrey Hewlett, Robbi Broquet, and Roberta Wright; his sister, Donna Lynn Edwards (and husband Donnie Edwards); five grandchildren; sister-in-law Elizabeth Hewlett, and many extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Elwyn Bramblett, Dennis Hewlett and Jack Hewlett.
